About this training
This continuing education program for mental health providers is designed to increase cultural competence in supporting clients from various spiritual backgrounds, including those who may have experienced religious harm. Topics covered in this training include: -Culturally competent assessment of clients’ spiritual beliefs and practices throughout the counseling relationship -Recognizing symptoms related to religious harm as they may present in the therapy space -Harmful and supportive aspects of religion / spirituality -Specific considerations based on an individuals faith background (learning from lived experience) -Impacts of high-control religion on typical human development -Unique complexities related to harm experienced in religious contexts -The role of sociopolitical factors in experiences of religious harm and faith deconstruction -Important treatment considerations when working with this population Whether you work specifically with religious/spiritual concerns or not, it’s almost guaranteed that you will have clients who have been impacted by religion in some way. Your investment in this course will provide you with tools to be more trauma-responsive in your work with clients, regardless of their religious or spiritual beliefs and practices. Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to: -Define important terms related to religion / spirituality and to religious harm -Differentiate potentially harmful religious practices from healthy spirituality -Identify unique developmental impacts of religious harm -Respond to survivors of religious harm in a trauma-responsive manner -Identify effective, evidence-based treatment options for working with survivors of religious harm IMPORTANT NOTE: This training intensive is offered over 2 consecutive days - Friday, October 23rd and Saturday, October 24th - from 10am-3pm ET each date. Live, virtual attendance at both sessions is required to be eligible for 8 NBCC-approved CE credit hours. There will be 2 breaks - one 45-minute break and one 15-minute break - during the course of each training date. You must attend the live training, and complete the NBCC required evaluation, in order to receive CE credits. ABOUT THE FACILITATOR: Michelle F. Moseley, LCMHC (she/her) is a licensed mental health counselor located in North Carolina, USA. She specializes in supporting survivors of religious harm, having worked with over 1,000 survivors in both individual and group settings. Michelle brings both her lived experience of religious harm and her clinical expertise to this training. Michelle F. Moseley Counseling, PLLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7712. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Michelle F. Moseley Counseling, PLLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
